Why choose the Deux-Sevres, Pointou-Charentes for your holiday? As well as having lots of things to do and tourist attractions the area south of the Loire is reckoned to have the most sunshine hours a year in
France outside of the Mediterranean. Another reason is it is rightly noted for it’s aperitif Pineau and excellent local Wine from the Haut Poitou area just south of the Loire Valley – quality wine at good prices.
Local delicacies include many cheeses, honey, butter and snails. It is a joy to explore because it is a relatively undiscovered traditional rural area of France. It is a place to unwind and recharge your batteries; travel
quiet roads to discover quaint villages and hamlets, historic towns and traditional markets. Visit the abundant examples of imposing well preserved ancien architecture such as Romanesque Churches, Chateaux
and Museums such as the Medieval Quarter in Parthenay; Poitiers 20 mins away has 3 trails to follow on foot around the city.
If you fancy being more active there are local walks, cycling around the quiet lanes or along the Valley of the River Thouret, horse riding and more nearby. We have a golf course 45 minutes away at Vasles. For the fishing
enthusiast there is Pescalis, the first international nature and fishing centre in Europe or enjoy fishing/sailing at one of the local lakes or rivers.
South west of Niort is the Marais Poitevin (Green Venice) – 900 miles of marshes woodland and waterways. Hire a boat to punt yourself or hire
someone to do it for you from the pretty village Coulon and enjoy the scenery, wildlife and tranquility.
The area boasts lots of places to take the family including Futuroscope and Puy du Fou, a theme park both regarded as one the best in Europe. Nearby zoos and animal parks include The Valley of the Monkeys, The Crocodile Park and Snake Island.
La Rochelle, one of the prettiest harbors in France has a maze of cloistered streets, excellent eating places, a Maritime Museum and an Aquarium which are house on historic ships. Cross the causeway to the Lie de Re –
well known for it’s sandy beaches and pretty ports.

Everyone always hopes that “this holiday will the best ever”. Happily it has been. The gite is well appointed and just like it’s hosts – Margaret and Brian – wonderfully welcoming. For us, this has been the first year in “France – proper” Off the tourist trail, but not off the beaten track. The garden provided much needed calm and peace and in between sorties to Saumur; Futuroscope, Breze; Thenezay; Parthenay and one excursion to Cognac!! As for the swimming pool. Like the equation shows – children + water = squeals of delight. The double bed/sofa was a delight : to put up and put away …. Food grown bought and eaten locally was a real pleasure. Nuff said! The Bds; Sutton Surrey
Yes, we agree about our skilful hosts who are open and friendly and can give insightful help when we asked for it, but otherwise keep a respectful distance to give us privacy on your holiday. We loved the Chateau de Breze – so unusual with half of it underground – English guide. Sanxay Roman Ruins were atmospheric and the wooden walkway over thermal baths, an unusual and effective way of seeing ruins. The Chateau d’Orion another very unusual experience of modern art – 36 rooms. Boules is fun on the gravel path if not a little inconsistent – seems to add to experience. Thanks so much…… J & D
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the region, gite was clean, comfortable and had every amenity we could wish for . Loved the pool! Gite in a great location; close to many attractions and Thenezay, Gourge and Parthenay all lovely places. Villandry and Ambroise well worth a visit. ‘Puy du Fou’ Theme Park a great day out, especially for children. Il de Re near La Rochelle well worth the 16.50 euro ‘Peage’ fee, lovely beaches . La Rochelle also a great place to visit but busy. Adrien, Sarah, Dan and Nat, West Yorkshire
First time in France and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves totally different holiday to what we normally do, but we feel totally relaxed & chilled out. French people very friendly & helpful especially with our French. The countryside is magnificent & plenty of wildlife to see. The gite is fantastic home from home withall amenities Margaret & Brian are very welcoming & helpful. Seen some wonderful churches …….. worth a visit to Parthenay to see the Medieval Quarter. The fishing is quite an eye opener. The river ‘The Thouet’ although very picturesque will frustrate you with ‘la poisson chat’ …. but it is fun. Etang de La Barre
